This is a book I read for my history of marriage and family class. It outlined the divorce movement within the United States, as well as some of the reasoning behind why it was so difficult to nationally legalize it. My favorite story was the tale of a woman who filed for divorce on the grounds of cruelty, only to have her husband state in sworn testamony that no, your honor, he never hit her. All that bruising on her body? Totally just a side affect of that monthly disease that all women suffer from. ...um, what? I'm no medical expert, but I'm pretty sure that a bleeding vagina doesn't cause black eyes. then there was the tale of a woman accused of bigamy by her husband. Her lawyer's arguement? That couldn't have happened because no self-respecting middle-class woman would have married an Irish guy. Fabulous.
seriously, who would marry an irish guy? ;)
