This is the second in Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell. I read the first one, "Postmortem" (which I just almost typed as "Postpartum," not the same thing at all) about a year ago and honestly, I didn't really know how I felt about it. It was really creepy and scary, which for all the mystery reading I do isn't something I actually like all that much. I didn't really like how cold and self-pitying the main character was, or how rampant Ms. Cornwell made the mommy issues in her background. But the mystery itself was really well written, so I thought I'd give it another shot.
And honestly? I'm glad I did. I liked this second one a lot more than I liked the first, especially since I can proclaim that I did actually like this one. The mystery was just as interesting, but the character development was handled much better this time around. Plus, not only are gay bars and reclusive authors two major themes, there's also a plotline involving a secret agent and a nefarious carwash connection. Overall, a pretty good read. the only thing that kind of got on my nerves was how much responsibility the police put on the medical examiner to handle during the investigation. And I figured out how the killer got in the house like, 5 whole pages before it was revealed. But that's just because I'm a genius.

Nefarious carwash? Like, Carwash-o-blood or something?
